Chemotherapy sounds really scary, but I want to show you it's not as bad as it seems. And as breast cancer awareness month comes to a close, let's remind ourselves to pay attention to our health every month of the year.

This Is What Chemo Looks Like

When I heard that I needed chemotherapy, my heart dropped. I immediately imagined myself frail and bald, sitting in a hospital chair alone with needles in my arm. But as my attitude surrounding my diagnosis changed, and very quickly I must say, so too did my outlook on my treatment. I took the reins.

When that first chemo appointment came around, it really wasn't as bad as I had thought. I won't pretend that I wasn't nervous, I am human, after all! But take a look - chemo really isn't as scary as one might think. It's all about how you CHOOSE to look at things in life and then, of course, how you handle them.

As breast cancer awareness months comes to a close, I also want to put a reminder out there to everyone, men and women, to stay in touch with your body and take control of your health and future. Just because this month is dedicated to breast cancer doesn't mean that your own healthcare awareness should wane in the other months. Stay on top of your mammograms, self-exams, and any other screenings you may need.

For so many health crises out there, especially breast cancer, early detection is key. Stay informed and be your own health care advocate!

Note: Since making this video, I've posted detailed information on breast self-exams here: http://www.joanlunden.com/category/35-breast-cancer/item/489-how-to-perform-a-self-breast-exam
