But I have no family history of breast cancer!
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer I was surprised, because I had no family history and being a health and wellness advocate I was living a healthy lifestyle. Many women I've been hearing from had similar reactions when they were diagnosed based on this myth that family history and your chances of getting breast cancer are very connected, but the National Breast Cancer Foundation shares that most women who have breast cancer have no family history. The Myth:
If you have a family history of breast cancer, you are likely to develop breast cancer, too.
The Truth:
While women who have a family history of breast cancer are in a higher risk group, most women who have breast cancer have no family history. Statistically only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of this disease. Read more.
